The Fruit Basket

Before the Pandemic, my office had a weekly fruit basket. It would come on a Monday and if you were the first one in the office you could unpack the mystery box and see what seasonal fruit would grace the office for the next 5 days. Sometimes (but not often) there would be left over banana’s on a Friday, which would mean banana bread over the weekend.

When the pandemic hit, the fruit box still came but no one was in the office. So we started rotating which employees would get the whole box of fruit for the week. Initially it was a godsend. The grocery stores were bare and fruit was a luxury. Eventually is was such a luxury that the supplier of the fruit box notified us that our fruit needed to be halved and we started getting half fruit/ half veggie box.

I actually feel a bit conscious advertising that I was able to have a whole fruit/ veggie box delivered to my house during the pandemic, (whenever it was my week to receive it anyways). I know there were many people struggling to find food. I am overwhelmingly grateful.

It was only possible because my employer had set up this employee benefit before the pandemic. While it sounds silly to say, ‘it’s not just about the paycheck;’ money could not buy fruit during the pandemic. I just wanted to say how grateful I am that my employer had this organized beforehand.

If you took the time to think about it, which work perks are you the most grateful for and why? X
